"Sales Is a Creative Process: Strategy, Burnout, and Rediscovering Your Art"

Creativity Isn’t Easy - and That’s the Point
We often think of creativity as painting, poetry, or music. But creativity is the lifeblood of everything we do - from leadership to innovation, from entrepreneurship to sales. And here’s the truth: creativity is rarely easy.
Henri Matisse once said, “Creativity takes courage.” Ernest Hemingway described writing as “sitting down at a typewriter and bleeding.” Steve Jobs reminded us that innovation is not about sudden inspiration but about “hard work, perseverance, and relentless focus.”
If the greatest artists and visionaries admit that creation is hard, why do we expect sales - one of the most creative professions - to be any different?
From Grit to Burnout
When I started in sales, I believed success was about talent and grit. You were either born with the ability to sell, or you weren’t. I thrived on hunger, competition, and external validation. I made more calls, sent more emails, booked more meetings, and filled my funnel faster than anyone else could.
And it worked - for a while - a long while. I shone bright, but like a diamond under pressure, I cracked. Burnout hit me hard. I couldn’t write an email, pick up the phone, or face rejection. I felt empty, numb, and disconnected from myself.
Burnout isn’t just exhaustion. It’s the loss of creativity. And when you lose creativity, you lose the very fuel that makes success sustainable.
Rediscovering Creativity
It wasn’t until I sat alone on a pier in the Okanagan that I realized what I had lost. I wasn’t just tired - I had lost my creativity. I couldn’t journal, sing, or write. I was hollow. I was a shell.
It took months of selfishly reclaiming my time, nourishing myself, and rediscovering joy before creativity returned. That’s when I understood: creativity isn’t optional. It’s the lifeblood of success.
Sales Is a Creative Process
Sales isn’t just about grit. It’s about artistry.
• Brainstorming verticals: Which industries need the problems you solve?
• Identifying individuals: Who will resonate with your message?
• Crafting talk tracks: What story will win a response?
• Engaging accounts: How can you surprise and delight clients with new solutions?
Every step is creative. Every strategy is a canvas. Every client interaction is an opportunity to co-create something that didn’t exist before.
Sales is not survival of the hungriest. Sales is strategy. And strategy is creativity.
Lessons Learned
1. Burnout = Loss of Creativity
If you feel numb, disengaged, or uninspired, it’s not just fatigue. It’s a signal that your creativity has been depleted.
2. Process Fuels Creativity
Grit alone burns you out. A process - a strategy - sustains you.
3. Salespeople Are Artists
Stop seeing sales as transactional. See it as transformational. You’re painting possibility with every conversation.
Closing Thought
If you’re in sales, you’re not just a closer - you’re a creator. You’re an artist. So paint possibility. Surprise your clients. Co-create solutions that didn’t exist before.
Because at the end of the day, creativity feeds your wins.
